I did not know Simon well, but well enough to know that his passing is a tremendous loss for the Hazards movement and the fight for justice for workers and their families. I saw him speak many times, and was privileged to share several platforms with him, where I was always struck by his empirical rigour, analytical acumen, and political insight, all of which he combined with an engaging and warm manner. He will leave a great legacy, and is a reminder that we can all aspire to combine making a contribution with retaining a throughgoing decency, humility and generosity. My thoughts are with his family, friends, and comrades, steve x Steve Tombs, Professor of Sociology, Liverpool John Moores University
